GU14 All Star Champions Win Western States Championship
AYSO Region 18 Triumphant in Western States Games!
Girls Under 14 Team wins overtime thriller!
Manhattan Beach, CA: This past Sunday, at the Lake Forrest Sports Park in Lake Forrest, CA, the Girls Under 14 AYSO All-Star team from Region 18, put their 7-1-1 record on the line in the State Championship against Lompoc and walked away with an overtime victory that ultimately went to kicks from the mark. Along the way, the GU14 All Star team took victories from Westchester, Hawthorne, and El Segundo in Area play. From there they moved on to the Section Championships in Riverside where they eliminated Pasadena and La Verne in the semi-final and championship game the weekend of February 21 and 22.
“The girls showed so much heart today”, said Albert Chen, head coach of the GU14 All Star team. “This was one of those games where it could have gone either way, and the team dug deep and tied Lompoc at the end of regulation to get us into overtime and ultimately the win on kicks from the mark. Huntley (Huntley Castner, assistant coach) and I are very proud of what they accomplished as a team and applaud their well-deserved achievement!”
“Congratulations to the girls and Albert and Huntley”, said Andrew Lelchuk, Regional Commissioner for Region 18. “This is what AYSO is all about – creating great experiences and long lasting memories. We are focused on that here in our region and will continue to put more resources toward instruction and mentoring for our volunteer coaches – so that all of our 3500 players can have great experiences like this team.”
Four other teams from Beach Cities Area 1D also won titles yesterday including El Segundo, Hawthorne and South Redondo.
